| Bette Papa received
a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of New Hampshire, and
a Master of Education degree in Mathematics from Tufts University. She has taught
mathematics to students at Granite State College since 1998. Prior to teaching at
GSC, Bette taught math for the Dover Adult Learning Center’s diploma program
and for the Marshwood Adult Education’s “Transition to College”
program. Bette is a familiar face around the Rochester and Portsmouth centers wearing
many hats including administrative assistant for the past 4 years.
Personal teaching-learning
statement: Many students are anxious about math so my goal for students
goes beyond specific academic outcomes. It is my desire that each develops a new
understanding and appreciation for math as they acquire new skills and refresh old
ones. I hope they find a new confidence in their ability to do math and let go of
the math anxiety that blocks their learning. I want students to learn to relax and
actually enjoy the class as they see that math is part of everyday life, is necessary
to learn, and actually can be fun.
When
not teaching mathematics, Bette enjoys spending time with her family. Her interests
include bird watching, learning to ride and drive Saddlebred horses, and walking
the dogs.
